High-Field Open MRI

An MRI is an excellent tool for diagnosing and treating many health concerns. Using a magnetic field and radio waves, MRI is capable of viewing internal body parts such as the organs, tissues, and bones. Most MRI machines are large, tube-shaped magnets and can be uncomfortable for many patients.

Open MRI machines, however, provide a more comfortable experience for patients who experience claustrophobia, have pain or mobility issues, or are larger in size. They are also an ideal solution for children. Many claustrophobic patients specifically seek high-field open MRI because these machines help reduce anxiety while maintaining image quality.

High-Field Open MRI

An MRI is often a necessary exam for diagnosing and treating various health concerns. MRI creates detailed images of internal body structures, such as organs, tissues, and bones, using a magnetic field that works with radio waves to produce clear, 3D images viewable from multiple angles.

While an MRI exam is noninvasive and painless, it can be uncomfortable for many people due to the enclosed structure of traditional machines, which include a large, tube-shaped magnet where patients must remain still for the duration of the exam.

What is the Difference Between a High-Field Open MRI and Open MRI?

When the Open MRI was first introduced in the 1990s to address the enclosed structure of traditional MRI machines, it yielded lower-quality images compared to conventional MRI systems. Today, the High-Field Open MRI, including 1.5T Open MRI scanners, delivers comparable image quality with an increased level of comfort. These systems are ideal for claustrophobic patients, young children, and those experiencing pain or other mobility issues.

Some of our centers also have Wide-Bore machines, which feature a larger tube than traditional MRI units. However, these alternative MRI machines cannot perform every type of exam, so it’s important to check ahead to ensure the system is right for your study.
